LRQA at the CQI Conference; Senior Management Engagement & Auditor Development Dominate ISO 9001:2015 Discussions

Mike James, Managing Director of leading assurance provider LRQA and Chair of the IIOC (Independent International Organisation for Certification), the global certification trade body, yesterday spoke at the CQI Leadership Conference in London in a session entitled ISO 9001:2015; What difference will it make?  ISO 9001 is the world’s most widely used international quality management system standard.  Today, over 1 million certificates are helping organisations from all four corners of the globe to manage their wealth creating processes.

In front of a packed audience, one of the most overriding questions was the engagement of senior management within organisations – which is a feature of the currently being revised standard.  “Through this, quality will consistently be on the ‘boardroom agenda’,” said Mike. “There was a great deal of discussion about that, in terms of how that might happen and how the changes to the standard would bring that about.”

The second area that attracted a great deal of discussion was the development of auditors and the change in the way in which audits will be conducted in the future.  “What this means is getting auditors to be more business rounded people rather than just technically focused, as well as looking at the use of technology to potentially do more work remotely and finally the change in languages by assessors to address more of a business agenda rather than just a technical agenda,” explained Mike.

LRQA is a major contributor to the development and improvement of standards and associated guidance in the fields of management systems and conformity assessment worldwide. As recognised voices in the industry - driven through our membership and Mike James’ chairmanship of the IIOC - our experts are actively involved in the international technical committees for all three of the world’s leading Management System Standards, specifically ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001/OHSAS 18001 (occupational health and safety).
